The time I was in Time Out New York’s Most Stylish New Yorkers (April 2011)

time-out

Hooboy, this is an interesting one; I’m simultaneously very proud and a little bit embarrassed to have been selected one of Time Out New York’s Most Stylish New Yorkers back in 2011. The photoshoot happened some months before the issue came out, and I’d just recently moved to NYC from Paris and was still figuring out shopping/dressing myself here. By the time the magazine hit the stands I didn’t love most of the things I’d…Continue Reading →

What not to wear: swamp edition

swamp-preview

Haha, this one is quite a story. November 2008, I was living in France and had plans to visit my homeland of New Jersey, and I’d arranged to finally meet my dear friend Allen Crawford (aka Lord Whimsy) in real life for the very first time. Allen’s idea of a good time: trekking around in the New Jersey Pine Barrens (a huge pine forest full of bogs and swamps) and showing me lots of rare…Continue Reading →

New Orleans photoshoot with Kevin O’Mara

KLO17437-x

Photoshoot with the charming and talented Kevin O’Mara in New Orleans late last year. The clothes here are nothing special; just my most casual traveling clothes; cotton pants and a plain black shirt from H&M, blazer from Uniqlo, and my usual plain black Armani Exchange sunglasses. I’m wearing my most comfortable and conservative shoes here, aka my traveling shoes; simple and lovely little Italian numbers I snagged at Daffy’s in Philly approximately one million years…Continue Reading →

Hannibal happens to be one of my favorite shows, but I would watch it for the suits alone

hannibal

…Except that thing he did one time with like the red zipped-up fleece under his jacket and over his shirt and tie. I get that it’s cold out all the time on Hannibal, but you got other options, man. I’m not mad, Hannibal, I’m just disappointed. Anyway: Esquire — How the New Hannibal Lecter Became the Best-Dressed Man On TV This is one sharp-dressed psychiatrist-cum-serial-psychopath. Every scene, Lecter seems to be in a new ensemble;…Continue Reading →

Is three leopard-print ties enough?

leopard-tie-preview

(Of course not!) So, I guess I have three leopard-print ties now. The first two I got from JackThreads; a normal yellow/brown one and a black and gray one, and this new one is from H&M. It was on sale for only five bucks! It’s also black and gray. But it’s different from my other black and gray one, damn it! They’re both necessary. Jacket is from Daffy’s, shirt is H&M, and sunglasses are Armani…Continue Reading →

I miss having pink hair

manning-pinkhair

This was around 2005 or so. I really miss dying my whole head a crazy color. These days I just do a streak in the back; that’s me pretending to be professional. (That huge-ass ring in my nose, I don’t miss so much.) My hair stylist has been working on convincing me to bring the streak (currently lavender, but usually pink or orange) up to the front, and eventually making it bigger, and I’m working…Continue Reading →

My pink Parisian bedroom, and the New Jersey tie

nj_tie

Haha, this is an old one, probably 2008. This is me in my little ol’ pink bedroom in Paris, in the neighborhood of Pigalle. That tie has little New Jerseys on it! I got it for $1.50 at Village Thrift in Pennsauken NJ, probably in the 1990s. No recollection about the rest of the outfit; probably various thrift stores mixed with some H&M. I surely do miss those striped pants, but the spiky-belt look is…Continue Reading →

At any given time I have as many as five different styling products in my hair

evo3

Today is one of those days. Here’s my routine: After washing and towel-drying my hair, I start with a nickel-sized blob of evo Easy Tiger Straightening Balm to smooth it out; my hair has been bleached so many times it can get very frizzy and wavy, particularly in summertime. I work that into my hair while it’s damp. I also put a few spritzes of evo Mister Fantastic Blowout Spray in there for extra body….Continue Reading →
